    Summarization: Sustainable development is a process associated with social, economic, and environmental decisions. First one has to define and assess sustainable development and then devise decision-making mechanisms. We have a model called SAFE (Sustainability Assessment by Fuzzy Evaluation) which uses data about environmental integrity, economic efficiency and social welfare, and then processes them via fuzzy logic to derive measures of human, ecological, and overall sustainability. A sensitivity analysis identifies the factors affecting sustainability. About eighty indicators are thus tested and classified according to sensitivity as promoting, impeding, or having no effect on sustainability. The method could become a useful tool to politicians and decision makers as they strive towards sustainability. The model is applied to the Greek and American economies.     We live in a finite world, and the sooner we come to terms with this, the better. Because the world we live in does not consist of infinite resources, we must understand that sustainable development is necessary for our survival. We can no longer afford to continue utilizing our resources at the current rate we are doing. We must aim to meet our needs in the present, and at the same time, ensure that we are cognizant and considerate of the needs of the generations that succeed us. As published by the United Nations (2015), the following are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that aim to transform the world by 2030: 1) no poverty; 2) zero hunger; 3) good health and well-being; 4) quality education; 5) gender equality; 6) clean water and sanitation; 7) affordable and clean energy; 8) decent work and economic growth; 9) industry, innovation, and infrastructure; 10) reduced inequality; 11) sustainable cities and communities; 12) responsible consumption and production; 13) climate action; 14) life below water; 15) life on land; 16) peace and justice strong institutions; and 17) partnerships to achieve the goal. Indubitably, some countries are performing better when it comes to adopting sustainable living compared to others.

    In this article is determined that the basis for the development of local self-government is the focus of the public administration system on decentralization and sustainable development of regions as independent social-ecological and economic systems. Following the tasks, principles, and resource potential of communities, the main problems of managing the sustainable development of United Territorial Communities (UTCs) are the economic decline of the national economy, high unemployment and low income. As well as social inequality and population ageing, poor infrastructure, lack of water resources, water and air pollution, uncivilized methods of solid waste disposal, soil degradation, limited access to renewable energy sources, poor entrepreneurial, innovation and investment activity. It defines the management of local governments to create appropriate conditions for increasing competitiveness, ensuring sustainable development on a modern technological basis, high productivity, employment and improving the well-being of community residents.

    MEd (Comparative and International Education), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus Countries globally are grappling with challenges such as food insecurity, poverty, inequality, economic growth, and climate change. The emergence of Covid-19 has exacerbated the aforesaid challenges and revealed the true nature of inequality in developing countries such as South Africa and Brazil. Now, more than ever, citizens globally require a type of education instilling knowledge, skills, behaviours and values that will enable them to take actions towards sustainable development. In other words, education for sustainable development (ESD) is necessary if the world is to mitigate current environmental, economic and social challenges. Higher educational institutions (HEIs) play a pivotal role in the quest for sustainable development, as these institutions develop future leaders, policymakers, business owners, and community leaders. The curriculum, research, extension activities and strategic planning of HEIs should be geared towards ESD, which has the potential to create a humane and fair world. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the effectiveness of HEIs in South Africa and Brazil in implementing ESD. In order to address the research objectives of this study, qualitative document analysis, following the principles of grounded theory, was employed, grounded in a postmodern research paradigm. The purpose of this study was distinctive, as scholarly literature is calling for more studies on the implementation of ESD in HEIs and in developing countries. In addition, the limited available research focuses on the environmental dimension of sustainability and sustainability in primary and secondary education, whereas less attention is devoted to higher education. This study addressed the latter. The findings reveal that South African and Brazilian HEIs have made considerable progress towards the implementation of ESD in their mission and vision statements, research, and extension activities. However, for improved implementation, ESD should be better inserted into the curricula and teaching practices of South African and Brazilian HEIs. In addition, there is an urgent need to provide training for educators and prospective teachers on sustainability-related pedagogical knowledge and competencies. The findings lead to the conclusion that the effective implementation of ESD will require a holistic approach of HEIs. This means that sustainability principles, knowledge and actions are clear in all academic activities and practices. Support from HEIs’ leaders is imperative in this regard. Masters

    The article is aimed at substantiating the theoretical foundations of management of sustainable development of enterprise, i.e.: development of an economic-mathematical model of the indicator of level of sustainable development of enterprise and definition of types of strategies of managerial influence on the internal system of enterprise in order to achieve the desired level of its sustainable development. The research is aimed at solving the current problem of providing the enterprise’s management with a scientific-practical instrumentarium for decision-making on sustainable development. The results obtained are of practical value, as they allow to quantify the level of sustainable development of enterprise on the basis of cost indicators and to systematically apply the substantiated types of strategies. The article discloses the essence of the indicator of distance to the status of sustainable development of enterprise as an criterion of evaluation of the level of its sustainable development. The conditions of both high and low levels of sustainable development of enterprise are analyzed. Four types of strategies are proposed to overcome the low level of sustainable development of enterprise: «investing in sustainable development», «making money by means of sustainable development», «saving on sustainable development», «sacrifice for the sake of sustainable development».

    AbstractThis article investigates the role of accounting disciplines in assessing and fostering corporate social performance (CSP) of business organisations to meet the UN Agenda 2030. Drawing from legitimacy theory, this qualitative study analyses if and how non‐financial reporting positively affects and fosters CSP practices and outcomes within the cruise industry. Specifically, using a case study methodology, a major cruise company has been analysed outlining its sustainable behaviour, through the manual content analysis of sustainability reports (2016–2017–2018), in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) introduced by the UN Agenda 2030. The findings outline that the cruise company presents a clear sustainability and community orientation and adopts several initiatives, mostly focused on environmental and social issues, addressed to meet the 17 SDGs, where reputation and positive image have been recognised as the major antecedents in the perspective of CSP. This study contributes to the literature giving a broader and different reading of sustainability reporting as a “booster” of the CSP in meeting the SDGs and a further interesting application of the legitimacy theory, and offers managerial implications to systematise the content of non‐financial reporting by improving the quality of disclosure to achieve the SDGs, with focus on CSP processes, outcomes and ways.

    In the XXth century the concept of public welfare was associated with economic growth and its rate. It was assumed that the economic growth provides society with the needed tools to solve its ecological and social problems. Theory attempted to explain the most important factors influencing economic growth and its efficient management. Yet it was discovered that the market economy system is not capable of solving society’s problems. The new type of world society and economy requires the rapid formation of processes, which reflect changing consciousness of the population. These processes include the rapid development of information technology, globalisation, which highlighted the significance of the environment, and the formation of social movements. Moreover, all the issues arising due to rapid changes can be rationally solved in a sustainable way. The analysis of methods used for evaluation of sustainable development has demonstrated that there is a lack of studies devoted to the assessment of sustainable development at the enterprise level. The most common problem encountered while assessing sustainability of the enterprise at the national and regional levels are the inadequate indicators. These should be based not only on the economic, environmental and social dimensions but as well on the technological and institutional dimensions. Another problem is the unreasonable number of the chosen indicators, which do not represent its distinct significance. This paper analyzed the problems of the concept of sustainable development and its implementation at different levels because the progress can only be made when there are challenges to overcome. The concept of sustainable enterprise was analyzed, followed by a discussion of importance of assessment of sustainability in the enterprises with its positive and negative aspects. Straipsnio tikslas – išanalizuoti darniosios plėtros vertinimo metodinį potencialą ir, remiantis analizės rezultatais, nubrėžti pagrindines įmonės darnios plėtros vertinimo tobulinimo gaires. Tyrimui atlikti naudoti šie metodai: mokslinės literatūros sisteminė analizė, įvairių požiūrių sintezė, grindžiama logine abstrakcija.     Indicators are increasingly dominating our lives; whether we are aware of it or not. They have been popular tools for sustainable development policy makers, planners and managers, largely because they do the hard work of condensing complexity into single values that can be more easily digested and acted upon. But much power rests with those who select the indicators deemed to be important. This paper explores some of these issues at what is now regarded by some as the new frontier in „indicatorology‟; their use and influence. The authors argue that a new tyranny of methodology may be at play.

    Summarization: Sustainable development is a process associated with social, economic, and environmental decisions. First one has to define and assess sustainable development and then devise decision-making mechanisms. We have a model called SAFE (Sustainability Assessment by Fuzzy Evaluation) which uses data about environmental integrity, economic efficiency and social welfare, and then processes them via fuzzy logic to derive measures of human, ecological, and overall sustainability. A sensitivity analysis identifies the factors affecting sustainability. About eighty indicators are thus tested and classified according to sensitivity as promoting, impeding, or having no effect on sustainability. The method could become a useful tool to politicians and decision makers as they strive towards sustainability. The model is applied to the Greek and American economies.     We live in a finite world, and the sooner we come to terms with this, the better. Because the world we live in does not consist of infinite resources, we must understand that sustainable development is necessary for our survival. We can no longer afford to continue utilizing our resources at the current rate we are doing. We must aim to meet our needs in the present, and at the same time, ensure that we are cognizant and considerate of the needs of the generations that succeed us. As published by the United Nations (2015), the following are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that aim to transform the world by 2030: 1) no poverty; 2) zero hunger; 3) good health and well-being; 4) quality education; 5) gender equality; 6) clean water and sanitation; 7) affordable and clean energy; 8) decent work and economic growth; 9) industry, innovation, and infrastructure; 10) reduced inequality; 11) sustainable cities and communities; 12) responsible consumption and production; 13) climate action; 14) life below water; 15) life on land; 16) peace and justice strong institutions; and 17) partnerships to achieve the goal. Indubitably, some countries are performing better when it comes to adopting sustainable living compared to others.

    In this article is determined that the basis for the development of local self-government is the focus of the public administration system on decentralization and sustainable development of regions as independent social-ecological and economic systems. Following the tasks, principles, and resource potential of communities, the main problems of managing the sustainable development of United Territorial Communities (UTCs) are the economic decline of the national economy, high unemployment and low income. As well as social inequality and population ageing, poor infrastructure, lack of water resources, water and air pollution, uncivilized methods of solid waste disposal, soil degradation, limited access to renewable energy sources, poor entrepreneurial, innovation and investment activity. It defines the management of local governments to create appropriate conditions for increasing competitiveness, ensuring sustainable development on a modern technological basis, high productivity, employment and improving the well-being of community residents.

    MEd (Comparative and International Education), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus Countries globally are grappling with challenges such as food insecurity, poverty, inequality, economic growth, and climate change. The emergence of Covid-19 has exacerbated the aforesaid challenges and revealed the true nature of inequality in developing countries such as South Africa and Brazil. Now, more than ever, citizens globally require a type of education instilling knowledge, skills, behaviours and values that will enable them to take actions towards sustainable development. In other words, education for sustainable development (ESD) is necessary if the world is to mitigate current environmental, economic and social challenges. Higher educational institutions (HEIs) play a pivotal role in the quest for sustainable development, as these institutions develop future leaders, policymakers, business owners, and community leaders. The curriculum, research, extension activities and strategic planning of HEIs should be geared towards ESD, which has the potential to create a humane and fair world. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the effectiveness of HEIs in South Africa and Brazil in implementing ESD. In order to address the research objectives of this study, qualitative document analysis, following the principles of grounded theory, was employed, grounded in a postmodern research paradigm. The purpose of this study was distinctive, as scholarly literature is calling for more studies on the implementation of ESD in HEIs and in developing countries. In addition, the limited available research focuses on the environmental dimension of sustainability and sustainability in primary and secondary education, whereas less attention is devoted to higher education. This study addressed the latter. The findings reveal that South African and Brazilian HEIs have made considerable progress towards the implementation of ESD in their mission and vision statements, research, and extension activities. However, for improved implementation, ESD should be better inserted into the curricula and teaching practices of South African and Brazilian HEIs. In addition, there is an urgent need to provide training for educators and prospective teachers on sustainability-related pedagogical knowledge and competencies. The findings lead to the conclusion that the effective implementation of ESD will require a holistic approach of HEIs. This means that sustainability principles, knowledge and actions are clear in all academic activities and practices. Support from HEIs’ leaders is imperative in this regard. Masters

    The article is aimed at substantiating the theoretical foundations of management of sustainable development of enterprise, i.e.: development of an economic-mathematical model of the indicator of level of sustainable development of enterprise and definition of types of strategies of managerial influence on the internal system of enterprise in order to achieve the desired level of its sustainable development. The research is aimed at solving the current problem of providing the enterprise’s management with a scientific-practical instrumentarium for decision-making on sustainable development. The results obtained are of practical value, as they allow to quantify the level of sustainable development of enterprise on the basis of cost indicators and to systematically apply the substantiated types of strategies. The article discloses the essence of the indicator of distance to the status of sustainable development of enterprise as an criterion of evaluation of the level of its sustainable development. The conditions of both high and low levels of sustainable development of enterprise are analyzed. Four types of strategies are proposed to overcome the low level of sustainable development of enterprise: «investing in sustainable development», «making money by means of sustainable development», «saving on sustainable development», «sacrifice for the sake of sustainable development».
