Con questo articolo vorremmo contribuire al dibattito storiografico su che cosa significhi, oggi, studiare la storia della lotta al terrorismo in Italia da una prospettiva internazionale. Questo aspetto, finora rimasto in un cono d’ombra nell’ambito della storiografia italiana, vorrebbe concentrarsi sul ruolo che la cooperazione internazionale tra i Paesi europei ha svolto dagli anni Settanta del Novecento. La comparsa della violenza politica armata nel cuore dell’Europa, nella seconda metà del 20° secolo, ci fornisce gli strumenti per poter oggi inserire la storia dell’antiterrorismo italiano in una dimensione globale. Tuttavia, questo discorso non esula dall’interconnettere la dimensione internazionale alle compresenti specificità nazionali. Si vorrebbe così stimolare una riflessione che provi a sintetizzare alcuni degli aspetti più significativi di cui dovrebbe tener conto una storia transnazionale di questo tipo. In secondo luogo, crediamo che un’indagine aperta alla comparazione e alla transnazionalità potrà senz’altro arricchire la storiografia italiana da diversi punti di vista. In terzo luogo, proponiamo dei percorsi metodologici che si aprano all’internazionalizzazione delle ricerche sul terrorismo e sull’antiterrorismo e che attingano dalla storia delle relazioni internazionali e dell’integrazione europea. With this article, we aim at drawing attention to a hitherto less studied perspective in the history of Italian counterterrorism: the international cooperation in order to tackle the transnational threat of terrorism. Departing from the observation of several similar phenomena of political violence in the second half of the 20th century, we understand the Italian “storia della lotta al terrorismo” as embedded in its global context. However, this does not mean neglecting national particularities. Firstly, we explain which are the most important aspects of a transnational history of the fight against terrorism. Secondly, we argue that the investigation of these aspects can enrich the Italian history of counterterrorism in manifold ways. Thirdly, we propose manners and methods to open up Italian contemporary historiography on the topic towards a broader field of historical analysis, intertwined with the histories of international relations and European Integration. Concluding, we claim that the histories of Italian and of European antiterrorism efforts complement each other and that the links between both of them can help to better understand a complex history of diplomatic duties, legal frameworks, and institutional structures
